The “Rule of Three” should only be viewed as a general guide line. There are many exceptions to these rules. For instance the record for holding ones breath is 10 minutes, 17 seconds, the crew of a boat once lasted 8 days without water, and people have survived without food for over 50 days. In most survival situations though, there are three priorities that should be met: Food, Water and Shelter. Keep these priorities in mind.
If there is anything you need to remember, SURVIVAL is it. It encompasses everything a survivor needs to be aware of. There is a reason why the worlds military forces teach this. The following will expand on the meaning of each letter. It’s highly recommended you study each letter.

Water (second to oxygen) is our most important nutrient during a survival situation, especially in hot areas where you’d rapidly lose water due to perspiration. Our bodies (depending on environment) can survive a maximum of roughly three days without the intake of water. This is assuming you’re at sea level with a moderate room temperature and a relative humidity. A typical person will lose about 2 to 3 liters of water per day in normal conditions but depending on the size of the person, physical exertion and temperature they could lose much more. If you were to factor in the conditions usually found in a survival or disaster situation, you could be losing as much as 4 to 6 liters! Fire has always been an essential element in human survival. It has a million and one uses and being able to make it will be an essential skill during an urban catastrophe. Here are a few things that can be done with fire:

- Purifying water

In cold temperatures the body burns extra calories to keep your body warm. Survival is all about energy expenditure, if you maintain a healthy internal temperature you conserve energy and you’ll be able to use that energy for more practical activities. Survivors must do their best to conserve as much energy as possible while still doing what’s necessary to survive. If you over exert yourself, you’ll lose calories (energy) and sweat which can eventually lead to chilling. If you become too cold, your body and mind will not function properly. For most of us, we’ve learned to survive through trial, error and observation. We’ve observed others that were successful and emulated their practices to learn from them. In regards to staying warm we see what others are wearing and observe their choice of styles, fabrics and brands. We emulate others and modify their choices to suit our taste and experience. Having a good understanding of tactical hand signals amongst your urban survival group will be a force multiplier when SHTF. Being able to communicate silently amongst each other will be critical to staying alive and taking out the enemy. Share this information with other members in your group and set a due date to have these tactical hand signals memorized. Once everyone in your group have these signals memorized it’s important that you go out and train/practice these until they’ve become internal/automatic. It will only require a few hours to memorize so you have no excuse to not study these, they could save a life one day.
